Research

There are about 7 million adoptees living in the United States and approximately 140,000 are adopted each year (Equal to the populations of: AK, WY, ND, SD, VT, RI, & DE).

Adoption is often forgotten when speaking about trauma, leading to a form of disenfranchised grief, which is grief that is not typically acknowledged or validated by society. Both the trauma and the unrecognized grief may contribute to significant mental health issues. Adoptees are statistically known to be more at risk for mental health problems; research has found that adopted children are at risk for suffering from mental health disorders.

12-14% between the ages of adopted children in the United States 8 and 18 are diagnosed with a mental health disorder each year, and almost 2x as likely as children brought up with their biological parents to suffer from mood disorders such as anxiety, depression, and behavioral issues.

Problem Statement

The impact adoption has on an adoptee’s mental health usually remains unacknowledged by society, as the implications of parents adopting a child are seen positively; “your parent loved you so much, she wanted you to have a better life,” adoptees might conflate love with loss. While there are available resources, such as therapy and support groups, it requires a lot of courage and potentially money for a person to seek the help they deserve.

It would be advantageous to create a resource(s) for general users, specifically parents and/or guardians with an adoptee or interested in adopting to utilize as a resource to best support the adoptee’s mental health. The resource(s) would also be a good resource for this audience to answer questions, give qualitative data, and provide tips and techniques to this overlooked problem in society. In addition to providing a glimpse of what an adoptee might experience with their mental health and its effects.

Nurture's Identity

MISSION STATEMENT: Nurture empathy for adoptee mental health.

VISION STATEMENT: A world where adoptees control their narrative and experiences, and loved ones act to nurture empathy and be a reliable outlet for adoptees to go to.

ABOUT: Nurture fosters empathy and is one of our core values in which we are empathetic to others and their experiences, no matter who they are. Empathy is a part of the human condition that helps connect ourselves to others and realize we are more similar than different.

WEBSITE DESIGN: is meant to house information and resources for parents or people close to an adoptee to better understand their experiences, provide emotional support, and help in their overall mental health.

OUTDOOR ADVERTISING: (signage, billboard, banners) is meant to be placed in bigger cities to provide fast data about adoptee mental health and the importance the issue has on society and how it affects the relationships they have with others.

Primary Logo

The Logo

The word 'nurture' is applicable to both being a good parent/guardian and nature. Nurture takes both of these concepts and are key aspects for the organization. The logo icon is an organic illustration of the letter 'N'; the two sides of the letter meet in the middle to make the leaf/petal shape. This is representative of the parent, guardian, or loved-one and adoptee in their life coming together to make a whole and make that connection, in which they can be a positive outlet and support the adoptee's mental health.

The abstract illustrations of the flowers reflects the nature aspect of the brand as well as growth of the relationships and one's mental health. The color pallet uses cool colors that are calm and relaxing, going back to nature.

Nurture Design Campaign

The Nurture Design Campaign is my Senior Capstone project; seniors are asked to select a topic they are passionate about that is prevalent in today's society and create a design campaign to help combat the problem – my topic is Adoptee Mental Health.
